Overview

The unique desert landscape of the Arabian Peninsula is like a blank canvas, on which a miraculous image of culture, religion, trade and technology has been painted. Just as the beauty and harshness of the endless, scorching desert landscape has shaped the local inhabitants and their way of life, it has also attracted famous explorers for centuries. For Marco Polo, Alexander the Great, Vasco da Gama, Lawrence of Arabia and others, the call of the desert was so strong that they were ready to leave their lives there. It has been said that once you have traveled through the desert, the desert leaves its mark forever. Today, encountering the desert is no longer a risk to your life, thanks to the roads and camps built there. It is pleasant to reach modern cities from the desert, built on the revenues flowing from the oil industry and banking. Large, forward-looking cities are built on sand or on land won from the sea.

The essence of the Arabian Peninsula lies primarily in its people. The inhabitants are united by Islam, their way of life, the call to prayer carried by the wind from the interior, and friendly hospitality even to complete strangers in modern cities and isolated desert villages. Ancient customs have taken on a more modern form, but they still live on. When thinking of Arabia, the mythical Queen of Sheba, caravans of camels bowed under a heavy load of incense, or the magnificent wooden coastal ships – dhows – carrying pearls leave the port for the sea. While trading in the souks, visiting ancient fortresses, or wandering the labyrinths of the streets of old towns, the mysterious Arabia of Scheherazade’s “One Thousand and One Nights” fairy tales comes to life. On a desert night, the twinkling stars in the sky are closer than we could ever dream. The fairy tale has not disappeared.
